November 29, 2009

Buying holiday gifts for most people is easy compared to selecting something special for a fisherman. Most anglers seem to have almost everything they need and prefer to make their own tackle and equipment selections. Knowing this, below are a few suggestions with universal appeal, guaranteed to bring a smile to the face of your favorite angler on Christmas morning.

• Fishing Caps - ($4.99 +) Fishing Caps make the perfect stocking stuffer because one size fits all, and every angler needs a new one.

• Magazines/Books/DVD’s - ($4.99 +) A perfect stocking stuffer that provides reading or viewing entertainment and “how to” advice.

• Marker Buoys - ($7.99 +) These colorful plastic buoys with 50’ to 100 feet of line and a wrap around lead weight, are thrown overboard when a good fishing spot is found.

• Filet Knife - ($9.99 +) A filet knife has a long handle and a flexible stainless steel blade. The blade length varies, but a six to nine inch knife is popular with freshwater anglers. Most knives come with a leather sheath. An electric knife ($19.99 +) makes the job quicker and easier when you have a lot of fish to clean

• Rod and Reel Combo’s - ($9.99 +) Spin-cast combos for the little ones are tangle resistant and decorated with pictures of their favorite movie characters. Spin-cast and spinning combos for lady anglers are available in pink and periwinkle colors.

• Deck Shoes - ($39.99 +) Waterproof leather deck shoes provide slip-free traction for safer boating.

• Fish Finder - ($79 +) Compact units that show fish on a black and white screen are perfect for the occasional angler. Color units begin at about $200.00 and increase in price with screen size and other features.

• Gore-Tex Jacket/Pants - ($99.99 +) This outwear keeps moisture, wind and rain from penetrating. It is lightweight, machine washable and comes in a wide variety of colors. A must have item for anglers who fish in all types of weather.

• Gift Cards - ($5.00 +) If you are still not sure about a gift for your favorite angler, purchase a gift card for the amount you wish to spend.

Tips From Capt. Gus:
It always feels colder (wind chill) on the water than it does on land. Dress for temperatures from ten to twenty degrees cooler than you expect. Layering allows one to remove clothing if needed.

Hot Spots of The Week:
Stripers are hitting live baits in the backs of major creeks early and in deeper water throughout the rest of the day. Best bets are the creeks above the Highway 150 Bridge and Mountain and Reed Creeks at the south end of Lake Norman. This week’s forecast is good to excellent for holiday anglers. Take a kid fishing!

The lake level is 95.7 or 4.3' below full pond, and the water surface temperature is in the fifties and sixties.
