Click Here To Learn How to Catch A Fish "T H I S B I G" on Lake NormanFishin' with Capt. Gus! ~ “Books”
November 16, 2008

Books about fishing and boating on Lake Norman make perfect gifts! Below, are three “must read” books by area authors.

Jake Bussolini has recently published his second book entitled, “Freshwater Fighters.”
Throughout the two-hundred and eighty-seven pages, he discusses the how to’s of catching bigger fish with sonar equipment, and by using time proven fishing techniques. Since Jake is a Lake Norman resident, much of his research comes from not only fishing Lake Norman, but also from conversing with local anglers.

“Freshwater Fighters” includes several chapters about catfish and striped bass, two of Lake Norman’s most popular species of fish. The book is a detailed follow-up of his first book, “Jake’s Take on the Lake”. Jake’s books can be purchased online at http://www.freshwaterfighters.com or at the Perfect Gift, 631 Brawley School Rd, Mooresville, NC 28117.

Jake’s books provide reading for the more serious angler, while my book, “Fish Tales and Other Stories, as told by Capt. Gus”, consists of amusing and less serious short stories. Throughout the book, you’ll meet many interesting characters like Rawhide, a crusty old striper fisherman obsessed with catching trophy fish and winning tournaments. Things don't always go well for the angler, but he keeps trying. Then, there's the character known as Catawba Cat, who will tell a story at the drop of a hat. He even begins to believe his own tales!

Hundred pound catfish, thirty-five pound mullet, and a close encounter with an African elephant in South Carolina, are just a few of the yarns he spins.

Deere Jon, Catawba's half-brother, fishes for thousand pound sturgeons at Santee Cooper, while Fishmore attempts to open a theme park for bass fishermen.

If you like shaggy dogs, you'll love the story about a fishing dog and why he was banned from fishing tournaments. There’s also one about Splash, a big striped bass that tangles with a submarine, and one about Lobo, a mussel eating river creature. “Fish Tales and Other Stories as told By Capt. Gus” can be purchased online at http://www.fishtalesandotherstories.com , or is also available at Perfect Gift.

Upcoming events:
A free seminar on “How to Catch Fall & Winter Catfish” is scheduled for Tuesday, November 25, 2008 at 6:30 p.m., Gander Mountain, Mooresville, Exit 36. The class, conducted by Lake Norman catfish guides Mac Byrum and Capt. Gus Gustafson, will cover the how’s when’s and where’s of catching cold water trophy catfish on LKN. For additional information call 704 658 0822.

Tips from Capt. Gus!
The best time to go fishing is on any day that ends in a Y!

Hot Spots of the Week:
Stripers and bass have been particularly active since lake water temperatures have reached sixty degrees. Fish are in shallower sections of creeks and coves on both sides of the Highway 150 Bridge. Live baits are best for stripers, but a variety of artificials are catching limits of bass. The lake level is down 2.7 feet from full pond. All public boat ramps are open. The water surface temperature is in the sixties.
