Click Here To Learn How to Catch A Fish "T H I S B I G" on Lake NormanFishin' with Capt. Gus! - Tee Shirts in the Mall
January 21, 2007

Tee shirts with leaping bass and catchy slogans seemed to be everywhere at Christmas. Some made their way from tackle shops to upscale department stores. They appeared on dump tables and on racks with trendy jeans. Some were worn by shoppers. Their messages were unique, funny and often enlightening.

Two shirts gave advice about which days were better to fish. The first one read, "The best days to fish are yesterday and tomorrow." The second said, "Only fish on days that end with a Y!"

I spotted a big guy walking through the mall wearing his T-shirt beneath a pair of four inch wide suspenders. His message was clear. "I have a retirement plan - FISHING!" That sounded like a good plan to me.

I also found some slogans on plaques and signs, like the one that read, "Boat Rules: Fish, Fish, and Fish!" A shirt hanging next to the plaque said, "I caught a big one, but it got away." How many times has that happened to you? A third one read, "I had two hundred yards of line. It wasn't enough!"

In a gift shop, I found a special one. "A fisherman and the best catch of his life live here." Another said, "Old Fishermen never die, they just lose their lure."

This one also got my attention. "I don't repeat fish tales, so listen carefully."

"Just flounder ‘n around." After reading this one, I couldn't decide if the person was a drifter or if he would rather be somewhere flounder fishing. This one, worn by a little tyke, read, "Been there, done that. Goin' fishing!"

Others said, "Fishing's got me hook, line and sinker." And, "Gone Fishin'. Be back at dark :30." Last, but not least, "A cast a day keeps the doctor away."

The Hot Spots of the week: High water has fish feeding close to the banks and in the backs of coves and creeks. Mountain and Stumpy continue to be creeks of choice for stripers. Bass (particularly spots), are hitting artificials in the Reeds and Davidson arms of the lower lake.

The past week, fishing was good to very good. Lake Norman's water level is 97.3 or 2.7' below full pond. The water surface temperature is in the high forties and low fifties.
